Means and Ends

What do you think of this editorial in The New York Times? Compare it to this on The Huffington Post. I think it is matter of timing. Tough, comparative and, yes, negative ads are part of today's political reality. But doesn't it make a difference WHO, or WHICH PARTY, is throwing the punches? Does self-restraint have ANY place within Democratic Party politics?

Mary B. I think the New York times editorial was more effective and more correct. I think that people can only take so much negative campaigning. Not only that but I think that they can handle less of it when it is their own party throwing punches at their own party. I am sick of hearing all the negative campagining going on between Hillary and Obama, I just want there to be a nominee and have the whole thing move on. It's time to find a candidate and start worrying about the Republicans rather than listening to two democrats argue with eachother.

Dan B. I don't think it matters which party is throwing punches. I believe the only time it matters is when you are down at the wire and you keep doing it whithin your party. For example; Barack and Hillary's fiasco that keeps going on it turning voters off because people are getting sick of watching them bicker like two little kids.

The New York Times article was hard hitting but it did not have anything nice to say about Hillary Clinton. Articles like this increase the negative toward the Democratic Party. I am personally getting really tired of the tug-a-war between Clinton and Obama. They need to shake hands and make up no matter who wins for the sake of the Democratic Party.

For the most part I don’t think it matters which party is throwing punches or which candidate is throwing punches. I think the back and forth negative ads have been blown out of proportion a little bit because as mentioned before it is apart of politics now a days and it just needs to be excepted. I think both articles had good points to make about the negativity and how they have had an overall effect on voters opinions and the Democratic party itself. I think a lot of people are tired of the race lasting as long as it has and are waiting for it to end and because of that there just seems to be that negative vibe about the whole thing.

I think there is a time and place for ads like this and articles like this. But I am personally getting tired of reading more and more about the drama between these two cadndiates of the Democratic party. This isn't how presidential campaigns should be handled, and I can't believe it is still going on..Steve

To me there is nothing inappropriate about negative campaign ads. We need to be prepared to be confronted with by every possible detail of a candidate or their platform, so long as the argument is relevant and not slandering. It only becomes inappropriate when the ads become personal. Saying that your better equipped to run a country during difficult times does not qualify as a personal attack, in my opinion.
